Permanian society and culture

A window into the lives of Permanians, their culture, rituals and daily routine

INTRODUCTION

Permanians (Permanian: ...) are an ethnic group primarily located in the northwest of ... that share a common Permanian culture, history, and language, identified with the principality of Permafrost.

With ties to nomadic tribes which roamed Permafrost centuries ago, Permanians are one of the oldest ethnic groups of the continent. Because of their past as seafaring nomads, Permanian tales are full of references to other cultures and customs. Yet, far from opening them to other nations, these tales have distorted with time and now reflect the beliefs and biases held by Permanians. Indeed, Permafrost's bloody history has rendered its population largely averse to foreigners, making it one of the most autarkist nation. For a long time under foreign control, Permafrost only recently gained independence during what is known as the Permanian Independence War. Beforehand, the country's ruler frequently changed between [place holder 1] and [place holder 2], two rival nations with ambitions of greatness and the military means to achieve them. However, peace didn't last for long before the Succession Wars broke out and incapacitated the country for 6 years.

Main article Permafrost (to come)

Because of this recent and painful history, Permafrost remains completely cut off from the outside world, protected by high walls on one front and the cruelty of the sea on the other. Even though, this isolation allowed biases to fester, it also gave Permanian society room to develop and heal after decades of brutal conflicts. While small, it developed a stable economy, allowing arts and culture to grow and expand into a considerable amount of knowledge and customs.

RELIGION & PHILOSOPHY

Main article: Duwism

Permanians are polytheistic and thus have a pantheon comprised of multiple deities with different roles and status. There are major deities, minor deities and some demigods or heroes. The myths regarding deities live on through oral traditions narrated by the elders, shamans and priests or priestesses in more populated areas. Most of these myths can be attached to one main religion : Duwism.

Duwism is the religion with the highest amount of followers in Permafrost. It takes inspiration from older or foreign myths as well as animistic beliefs but it also influences other Permanian religions. When speaking of religion for the Permanians, it must be assumed that, unless specified, we are speaking of Duwism as it has a bigger role in Permanian society than other beliefs.

Religion is very strongly influenced by the magic of this world and the creatures that inhabit it. Most if not all myths are real or have at least an inkling of truth hidden in them.

Gods, goddesses and divinities live on a separate plane of existence as humans but they can still be seen and creatures as well as spirits have the ability to cross the bridge between those two realms. Some humans also have that ability, they are called Seers and even the weakest of them can at the very least spiritually travel to the divine realm. Noah the Blacksmith is one of the most well known Seer and all of his children have Seer blood running through their veins, which explains Descendants' special abilities.
